Energy Recovery in the Refrigeration Sector: Workshop and Technical Talk

Synopsis

Workshop:

Title: Chiller Condenser Water Heat Recovery

Workshop Lecturer: Julian DeBullet, ASHRAE Distinguished Lecturer, President deBullet Consulting, Front Royal, Virgina, USA

Time: 1400-1630

ASHRAE STD 90.1, a U.S.A. Energy Code, now requires the consideration of condenser water
heat recovery for large projects. We will discuss the details of designing condenser water heat
recovery, including load sizing and controls. We will look at several different methods of
recovering the heat and analyze their pros and cons. Condenser water is typically the largest
waste heat source in the building. While this heat can be used for service hot water or building
heating, it can also be used for snow melting or process loads as well. Provided the golden rule
is met (there is simultaneous heating and cooling), condenser water energy recovery show can
show a “green” solution as well as a very attractive financial solution.

This workshop is targeted at design engineers.

ASHRAE Ireland Chapter AGM

Time: 1630-1715

Technical Talk #1:

Title: SEAI EXCEED Programme

Time: 1730-1900

Speaker: John Mullaney, Programme Manager – EXEED, Sustainable Eenrgy Authority Ireland (SEAI)

SEAI EXCEED Programme: Excellence in Energy Efficiency Design (EXEED) enables organisations establish a systematic approach to design, construction, and commissioning processes for new investments and upgrades to existing assets. The EXEED Certified program aims to influence and deliver new best practices in energy efficient design management. EXEED designs, verifies, and manages optimum energy performance and management at the earliest stages of the lifecycle. We also provide an EXEED grant scheme up to the value of €500,000 per year per project.

Technical Talk #2:

Title: Chiller Cooling Tower Water- Hot and Cold Recovery

Speaker: Julian DeBullet, ASHRAE Distinguished Lecturer, President deBullett Consulting, Front Royal, Virginia, USA

ASHRAE STD 90.1, a U.S.A. Energy Code, includes the consideration of both a water side
economizer and condenser water heat recovery for large projects. We will discuss the details
of both applications, including piping options and controls. We will analyze their pros and cons
to show a “green” solution as well as overall system energy savings. We will end with a
discussion on the use of a variable primary flow design which can be more difficult to design
than other chiller plant designs. Special emphasis will be placed on the impact of operator
training and system servicing to ensure a successful project.
